Things you can do while you're here
Have a ramble...T he popular Wicklow Way, a 127km self guided walking trail, passes just 2km from The Skylark's Rest. We are a convenient accommodation option in Roundwood for anyone walking the Knockree - Roundwood or the Roundwood - Glendalough sections of the Wicklow Way. A baggage transfer service operates the length of the Wicklow Way.
There is a wide range of other local walks from the leisurely to the more challenging hillwalking routes that are easily accessible from The Skylark's Rest, including walks around Lough Dan and Luggala. We can provide information on the range of walks that are suited to individual interest levels.
Glendalough, the valley of the two lakes, is 10km from us and has some of the most spectacular scenery in Ireland. There is a network of way-marked trails and walks around Glendalough that you can enjoy.
Get on your bike... You can explore Roundwood and the surrounding area by bicycle. We have road bikes for hire and provide information on various cycling routes around the area, many of which will take you away from the busier roads for quieter enjoyment of the countryside. Ballinastoe Mountain Bike Trail, a 14km network of purpose built mountain bike trails, is 5km from the Skylark's Rest. We can arrange for you to hire a mountain bike from local providers, Biking.ie, who also provide lessons and mountain bike tours tailored to all ability levels. Cast a line... Angling for brown trout (by artificial fly only) is available on the shores of the lower Vartry Reservoir in Roundwood (1st Mar - 12th Oct). A permit is needed for fishing here; these are issued from Vartry Waterworks located beside the lower reservoir. For further information, contact 01-2818368 or email vartry@dubwater.iol.ie.
Alternatively, you can enjoy some relaxing fishing on a peaceful 4 acre fly fishing lake on the banks of the Avonmore River at nearby Annamoe Trout Fishery . All equipment and accessories can be hired at the fishery. Casting tuition can also be arranged.
 Saddle-up...Situated in picturesque woodland just 5 minutes from Roundwood Tomdarragh Equestrian, with their team of qualified BHS instructors, offers treks and lessons on a group or individual basis.
Scale a rock-face...There are quite a number of options for rock-climbing nearby, including Lough Dan, Luggala and Glendalough.
Tee off...There are three golf clubs in the Roundwood area:  Ballinastoe Golf Club is a nine-hole course 5km from us and just across the road from Ballinastoe Mountain Bike Trail.
Djouce Golf Club is a nine-hole course that can be found 5km from The Skylark's Rest on the R755 road to Bray.
Roundwood Golf Club is an 18 hole course on the R765 road to nearby Newtownmountkennedy.
Take aim... Hilltop Shooting Club offers a range of outdoor activities, including shooting lessons, clay shooting, rifle shooting and archery.
Skirmish Paintball is situated on a 30 acre forest and has 6 purpose built paintball game areas that are ideal for social or corporate occasions.
Other nearby places of interest and attractionsPowerscourt Estate in Enniskerry has 47 arcres of gardens, first developed over two and a half centuries ago, that are open to the public. Visitors can also avail of the Terrace Cafe, Avoca Stores and a Garden Pavillion as well as a trip to the Powerscourt Waterfall.
Mount Usher Gardens in Ashford are set on the banks of the Vartry River. These gardens are also open to the public and have a garden cafe and shopping courtyard for visitors to enjoy.
Clara Lara Fun Park is an outdoor adventure centre ideally suited for a family day out.
Glenroe Farm gives you the opportunity to get up close to many farm animals and pets. It also has a play area, gardens, nature walk and coffee shop.
